Citizenship can be summed up in one line: show respect for all people. The above Bible verse from the first book of Peter furthers explains how we should show respect. We must love the brothers and sisters of God’s family, respect God and honour the king.
A good citizen helps to make things better by respecting the authorities, obeying the laws of the land, protecting the environment and being active in the community.
But who cares? What does citizenship have to do with me? God gives us gifts in the forms of blessings. Our purpose in life is to activate those gifts, those talents by using them in the service of others.
We should not keep our God given talents to ourselves. By using our talents for the good of others, we become good citizens of the world. Listen to the words of these famous good citizens:
We have opportunities to be good citizens every moment of our lives. The opportunities present themselves in the spaces of the world: the community, in our homes and right now in our personal spaces.
We are good citizens when we are attentive to the needs of others. We are good citizens when we are respectful and obedient. We are good citizens when we think kind thoughts, speak kind words and are kind to others.
“Every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing.”
This year I have resolved to be happy in all seasons of my life, whether I am on top of a mountain or in the depths of the valley. The above quote gives hope to those who are in a trying season and gives reassurance to those who are in a victorious point in their lives. Your spirituality, career, finances, love or health are some of those mountains faced in life. The aspirations linked to better one’s position in life can be seen as lofty and unattainable by others and even yourself. Others may try to discourage by laughing at your dreams or planting seeds of doubt in your mind. You may be at a point in your life, where you believe that you may not deserve to reach the zenith of each of these mountains. Yet preparation uproots the doubt, ceases the laughter and positively aligns your thoughts.
Every mountain climber goes through preparation. The process is felt on a physical, mental and emotional level. The appropriate gear is essential to make it to the top of the mountain. Strenuous endurance and strength training ensures that the stamina levels can withstand the surface and atmospheric challenges of the mountain. The physical preparation overflows into the mental and emotion preparation. Achieving the goal is paramount. It is essential to differentiate what tasks to undertake and what pleasures to withdraw from life in order to reach the pinnacle of success. More importantly, mountain climbers condition themselves to keep going through all circumstances.
Life is like that mountain climb. Know what you want to achieve and go for it with everything within you. No matter how difficult it looks, no matter how crazy it may seem, never give up. Keep climbing, persevere, because eventually you will make it and your journey will be worth it. Strength and character will be tested and through those challenges it will lead toward the best version of yourself.
