The 3Cs: Cool, Calm and Collected

Just gather your thoughts and breathe.

Too many times we see people fly off the handle. Too many times we fly off the handle. What causes us to get angry? We feel a sense of hurt or betrayal. We feel that someone has mistreated or taken advantage of us in some way. Our human character conditions us to believe that justice must be served. Yet we are frustrated when our efforts to make things right from our perspective become thwarted. The best laid plans transform into the worst made plans and we suffer the consequences linked to our impatience and desire for a speedy resolution to our conflict.

When tensions ride high in moments where emotions overtake sound reasoning, we must be still and breathe. By doing this we slow our heart rate that races in the heat of the moment. As our heart rate slows all things connected with it, physically, mentally and spiritually will do the same. We look at the situation through the lens of objectivity. Our mind becomes focused on a search for a resolution which will benefit all involved in the conflict and not just ourselves.

Whenever we think of the 3Cs: Cool, Calm and Collected, a visualisation of a yoga pose comes to mind. Whether it is the lotus position or downward dog, the meditative posture dominates our thinking. The concept of Zen also comes into the visualisation as there is a balance and a harmony of mind, body and soul. Unfortunately, the skill of the 3Cs is not mastered overnight. It takes years of self discipline and training. As a famous Zen proverb postulates, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Instead of taking the easy way out and flying off the handle when anger arises. Instead of suffering the consequences of hasty moves and decisions. Take a single step towards the 3Cs. Stay cool, keep calm and be collected. A calm mind is the most effective weapon in the difficulties of life.

Just gather your thoughts and breathe.
